If you’ve been having trouble with your audio on your computer, don’t worry. In all likelihood it isn’t a problem that will require you to take it down to the repair shop or call up that computer technician who will overcharge you for a simple fix. You can easily resolve audio issues on your own, and all you’ll really need is a simple download. But before we proceed with that amazingly simple solution, let’s run through some of the common troubleshooting checks.
Check to see if your speakers are turned on. Is the power cable firmly plugged into a working electrical outlet? If it is, you need to then check if your speakers or headphones are connected properly. The sound cable for either the speakers or the headphones must be plugged in securely into the computer, in the appropriate jack (usually the audio-in jack). If you’re unsure, refer to the documentation that came with your speakers or your headphones. Also, you might want to try using different headphones or speakers to determine that it isn’t defective.
Have you tried adjusting the volume settings on your computer? Make sure that you don’t have the volume set to mute. Is the file you’re trying to play working properly? If your computer can’t play the media file then it makes perfect sense why you can’t hear anything from your speakers.
Next, determine if your sound device is configured properly. Check under the Device Manager and ensure that your sound device is enabled. Note that if you have more than one sound device installed in your system, the device you’re trying to use should be listed as the default sound device. Again, if you’re unsure of how to go about this, refer to the documentation that came with your sound card.
Now if you’ve run through all that tedious troubleshooting process and you’re still unable to get your audio working, then the problem most likely lies in not having working device drivers. The device drivers for the sound card might have been corrupted or become outdated or even missing for some reason or other, and you’ll need to download updates for them in order to get your audio back.
For those of you who don’t know what drivers are, they’re basically translators for your hardware and operating system, providing them a universal language that they can understand in order to decipher the data being passed back and forth to them. Drivers also add certain enhanced functionalities to certain devices, but their most important use is that they enable your devices to be detected and recognized by the computer. Without them, your devices are as good as non-functioning paperweights.
There are several ways in which you can update your sound card drivers. The best way however is through the use of a program called a driver scan software. This program seeks out corrupt or outdated drivers in your system and provides the necessary updates in order to keep your computer running smoothly and hassle-free. So if you’ve ever had issues with your audio or any hardware component for that matter, try downloading a driver scan software to determine that it isn’t a driver issue.
